Praising God

The random Bible quote generators gave me Psalm 63:3-4, and I looked up the surrounding lines to get this beautiful passage:

Psalm 63:1-8 (NIV)

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

For the first time, I imagined reading a Biblical passage in a sermon to a congregation…  and this was the one.  If possible it will be the first Biblical words I speak in my first sermon, whenever God wills that to be.  In reading the above I realized that I was failing to praise God;  I thank Him for every good thing that happens in my life, I talk to Him all day, I express my love and faith…  but none of those things are praise per se.  I stopped and spoke to Him, and began to tell Him how wonderful He is, that He is the best thing in the universe, the epitome of all that is good…  and I got BIG chills.  So, that was the right thing to do, and I should have been doing it all along…  and I intend to keep it up, since it clearly pleased Him.

I went to BibleGateway;  the quote on their front page was:

Romans 15:7  (NIV)

Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

JO should really have used this one in his sermon “Accepting people for who they are,” posted 5-14.  It’s a keeper.

I just noticed that it’s 7AM and I haven’t been to bed.  I said to God, “It doesn’t matter, this is far more important than sleep.”  Another strong chill.  This daily focus on Bible quotes is clearly the right thing to do.

I have failed to mention that I have purchased my first Bible;  it’s the one with notes from JO in it.  What will I find when the urge comes to remove the wrapper and dive in?
